School calendar adjusted againGood Friday, Memorial Day will be class days
During its March meeting, the Haywood County Board of Education voted to adjust the school calendar to make up for missed days on Feb. 12 and 14.
There is an average of eight missed student days at Haywood County Schools due to inclement weather, but so far, 11 days have been missed this school year. This is due to frequent snow and ice, as well as some abnormally low temperatures.
The board approved making Friday, April 18, a noon p.m. dismissal and Monday, May 26, a full school day.
“When you have an unusually difficult winter, you are forced to make unusual adjustments to the school calendar," said Bill Nolte, associate superintendent. "While there is not a perfect way to adjust the calendar, this move maintains 180 school days, prevents employees from losing pay and prevents school from rolling into the third week in June.”
Pending additional closings, this move by the board allows school to finish on Thursday, June 12.
