The initial two-hour delay in the opening of Haywood County Schools has turned into a cancellation due to snow falling across many parts of the county.
As school officials monitored weather conditions over night and into the morning, the majority roads remained wet and warm, said Associate Superintendent Bill Nolte.
"Unfortunately, heavy snow began to fall and to stick to some roads and other surfaces around 5:15 a.m. This prompted the two-hour delay call," Nolte said. "Just before 8 a.m. temperatures dipped below freezing and ice began to form on roadways. This resulted in schools closing for the day."
Tuesday, March 14, is an optional workday for employees. Employees make work or use accumulated leave, Nolte said. Making up the day will be determine and shared later today.
