School gives some flexibility with Saturday school
During the Nov. 8, regularly scheduled meeting of the Haywood County Board of Education, the Board gave the superintendent some flexibility in declaring Saturday school.
When the original calendar for 2012-13 was developed, the school district’s calendar committee recommended that Saturday school occur when winter weather causes school to close on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. This recommendation was approved by the board last spring when it adopted the 2012-13 school calendar.
During their last meeting, school board members discussed the issue and voted to continue having Saturday school when school is closed on Monday or Tuesday because of winter weather. The board’s action allowed Superintendent Anne Garrett to use her discretion to determine if Saturday school should occur with school is missed on Wednesdays.
“We appreciate the board giving us flexibility on Saturday school," Garrett said. "We will consider a number of factors to make this decision. This will included where we are in the calendar, the number of available make up days and the current instructional needs of the school district.”
