See antique heirloom quilts, wall hangings at Cruso Quilt Show Friday and Saturday

The Cruso Friendship Club will host its 24th Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Cruso Community Center on U.S. Highway 276 S. Admission is free and lunch will be available.

The quilt show features antique heirloom quilts from local families, traditional and artistic quilts, wall hangings and wearable art. Featured in the old schoolhouse classrooms are antique sewing machine on display and for sale, fabric sales, quilting supplies/notions and long-arm quilting information, sewing machine repair, scissor sharpening and "Basket Mania."

The club’s hand-quilted donation quilt “Scrap Basket Bounty” (Pinwheels and Nine Patch) featuring 1930s reproduction fabrics was pieced by members of Cruso Friendship Club quilting group and will go to a winner at 4 p.m. Saturday. The donation for the quilt drawing is $1 per ticket or six tickets for $5. Proceeds from the donation quilt will provide scholarships, baskets for shut-ins and support community center activities.

New this year at the quilt show will be an old fashioned bed turning of antique quilts at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Friday. The bed turning will take place again on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Quilting technique demonstrations will be presented at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday and at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Cruso Community Center is also now on the Quilt Trail, a project that connects quilts and area history, with the quilt block “Moon Over Cold Mountain."
