On Thursday, April 17, some seniors were pleasantly surprised by Jenny Wood of the Haywood County Schools Foundation. Wood and her team presented scholarships to the Central Haywood seniors who had submitted applications. All scholarship winners from across the county will be honored Monday, May 5, at the Lambuth Inn during a special Partners in Education Night.

Tabitha Ammons received the $500 Eckerd Scholarship; Austin Gayne was awarded the same amount for the Pepsi Vocational Scholarship. Richard McKinney was awarded two — the Nick Mastriana Memorial and the Altrusa Women's Club Scholarship. Haywood County Schools Foundation awarded $500 each to Cameron Brashear, Jessica Shoemaker and Paige Sutton.

Seniors chosen this year as students of the month for the Altrusa Club recently received invitations to attend a special recognition luncheon Tuesday, May 6, at  Bocelli's. Gayne, McKinney and Taylor Mann were chosen by the staff for this honor.

Central Haywood will hold Senior Night on Thursday, May 8, to inform seniors and their parents about all the events and requirements for the upcoming graduation June 13. Supper will be served at 5 p.m. followed by the meeting. A group graduation photo will be taken in caps and gowns to be used in the graduation issue of The Mountaineer, framed for the principal's office and to be forever be a part of the school's history as the 20th class of graduates for the school.

Graduation is quickly approaching. The 20th year graduation celebration for CHHS will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, June 13, at the Haywood Community College auditorium. Richard Reeves, whose vision was the blueprint for Haywood County's only alternative high school and founding principal, will be the keynote speaker. All past and present staff members, students and families are invited to the celebration.

Donna Parris is the lead teacher at Central High School.
