The Senior Resource Center announces the beginning of the Senior Chorus.

Hugh Burford has been selected to lead and direct the chorus.

“I saw this movie, ‘Young at Heart,’ about a very successful senior chorus, and it intrigued me that we didn’t have one here,” said Burford.

He took a conducting class at Western Carolina University and also received tutoring by Frizie Wise, retired Tuscola High School choir teacher.

“She says I’m ready to go,” said Burford.

The first meeting of the senior chorus will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Senior Resource Center, located at 81 Elmwood Way, Waynesville. The chorus is open to all individuals age 65 and older who enjoy singing. If enough people are interested, the chorus will meet every Friday.

“The hope is we’ll get good enough to offer concerts for the community,” said Burford. “We’ll be serious singers who are interested in learning and performing.”

The first meeting will be casual.

“We’ll sing some songs, watch ‘Young at Heart’ and talk about organizing a senior chorus,” said Burford.
