Physician pay under Medicare is a looming issue, whoever wins
To the editor: What a fantastic job you did with the Medicare article. How well researched it was and the pro and con sections were really good very even handed.
There were just one or two things I wanted to comment on.
The first is the most important. SGR or Sustained Growth Rate initiative This law was passed as you said in 1997 by a Republican-controlled Congress, though had widespread bi-partisan support and signed into law by Bill Clinton.
The essence of this law was sort of like this, obviously paraphrasing: “If y’all can’t control the cost of medical care for seniors, we are going to start reducing payments to doctors by 5 percent per year starting in 2005 for six years.”
