Shelter opens for fifth season
With an early winter snow already behind us, and a cold winter expected, Haywood County’s only homeless shelter is now open for those in need of a warm place to sleep.
The Haywood Christian Emergency Shelter at Camp New Life in Waynesville, a nonprofit six-month shelter, opened for its fifth season yesterday.
The shelter was first opened in 2008 when a group of local churches, nonprofits and community members gathered to discuss ways to provide for the homeless in the county.
As concerned citizens were talking, they realized the closest shelter was in Buncombe County, too far for any of the local homeless population to use. That’s when the idea for the shelter was born.
