The Rotary Club of Waynesville recently recognized Haywood County Sheriff Greg Christopher with the Outstanding Community Service Award during its weekly meeting at Laurel Ridge Country Club.

Rotary Club president June Ray, who is also Clerk of Superior Court for Haywood County, said she has worked closely with Christopher over her 32 years in the court system during his time with the NC Highway Patrol and as sheriff.

During his short time as the county's leading law enforcement officer since February, she said Christopher has gone above and beyond his role as sheriff. Among his mentioned accolades were increasing felony arrests by 28.5 percent and doubling the average inmate population at the Haywood County Detention Center to 125 daily.

He was also commended for his drug enforcement partnership with other local police agencies and the SBI, bringing a second K9 to the sheriff's office to assist with drug searches, providing a strong jail ministry for inmates and involving inmates in more community work such as roadside trash pickup.
