WAYNESVILLE — Shirley Marie Embody, 87, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017, at her residence.
A native on Conrad, Montana, she was the daughter of the late Carl M. and Anna Pfifer Embody. She was preceded in death by her partner, Ann Coley; sisters, Hattie Embody, Margaret Dupler, Verna Warwick, Stella Kinney, Anna Pearl Evans, Bonnie Embody, Eily Jean Cameron; brothers, Carl, Arlie, Emmet, Orbie and Joe Embody. Shirley graduated Conrad High School in 1948. That same year she enrolled at Montana State University in Missoula, Montana, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Journalism. Upon graduation she accepted a position with a newspaper in the State of Washington and began to fulfill her dreams of world travel. After several years in Washington, Shirley moved to California. After a time she accepted a position with the American Embassy as a U.S. Civil Service employee serving in Bangkok, Thailand working within the Embassy’s Communication Center.
In the ensuing years Shirley continued working for the American Embassies in Washington, D.C., London and Paris. Upon retiring from the Civil Service, she settled in Malaga, Spain and spent several years in the real estate business and then returned to the U.S. living in New York City from 1981 to 1994 working with stock investment profiles. During this time one year was spent living in India. In 1994 Shirley built a pod home in the mountains near Waynesville, North Carolina, and continued traveling throughout the world with long-time friends. While living in the United States she went home to Montana every year. She loved her birthplace and the pleasure of visiting her family.
Shirley is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial reception will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Wells Events & Reception Center.
