The Civil War Round Table Fall Tour is scheduled for Oct. 24-26

The tour will begin at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in the parking lot of the Jackson County Justice Center, located at 401 Grindstaff Cove Road, Sylva.

Participants will convoy in private vehicles to the first stop in Montgomery, Alabama. Tour members will tour the remains and site of a Confederate naval shipyard and several other sites in Montgomery. The tour guide for this portion of the trip will be Kent Wright, of the TVCWRT.

The convoy will then head to Spanish Fort in Baldwin County, Alabama, for an overnight stay at the Microtel by Wyndam. Those of the group who are carpooling in the convoy may choose to ride the bus to Spanish Fort with members of the TV Round Table.

It is anticipated that on arrival at the hotel and after the evening meal, there will be a briefing and slide presentation about the tour from tour guides, John Mason and Kent Wright. Mason will also be the guest speaker at the Round Table’s October meeting.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, the group will board the bus to begin the Battle tour. This tour will include stops at Fort Gaines and other locations germane to the battle itself.

On Sunday, Oct. 26, the group will board the bus for a look at what’s left of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, which was the site of the last major battle east of the Mississippi and the surrender of a very large contingent of Confederate soldiers.

The hope is that the group can begin its trip home at a decent hour The cost for the tour is $85, contingent on there being 15 people or more sign up for the tour. Should there be less than 15 people, the price will go up. The fee includes the bus and tour guides. The hotel charge is $78.21 for a double queen room; when making reservations (call 251-621-7807) ask for “Civil War tour.” There are currently 10 rooms booked.

While participants are responsible for their meals, the hotel does provide a free breakfast.

Those who are willing to drive with passengers are asked to call Richard Smith at 293-5924. The total roundtrip mileage is about 970 miles.
