Smathers joins tourism staff
Anna Smathers, a 2003 Pisgah High School graduate, has been hired as the new communications manager at the Haywood County Tourism Development Authority.
The position had previously been contracted to an outside source but it was determined a full time in-house staff member would be a greater benefit to the organizations growing needs.
Smathers will be responsible for working with travel writers, magazines, newspapers, and electronic media to promote and create awareness of Haywood County as a travel destination. She will work to enhance the county’s image and visibility to the traveling public through various marketing and public relation initiatives. She will also build and maintain lines of communications with local and regional tourism partners.
Smathers graduated from Appalachian State University in 2007 with a bachelor of science in recreation management and focused concentration in commercial recreation and tourism management.
After graduation she worked at a locally owned travel agency, Viking Travel, then continued her career at The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, where she was promoted to executive meetings sales manager and remained until recently. While at the resort, Smathers worked closely to plan and assist with President Barack Obama’s visit to the resort in 2010.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Haywood County TDA as communications manager. It has been my career goal to develop and promote tourism in North Carolina and being selected to do this in my home county is such a honor,” Smathers said. “I have some great ideas in mind and want to bring Haywood to the frontline as a top destination in the area. I look forward getting started and sharing my love of the area with everyone I meet.”
Anna will be based at the Haywood County TDA office, which is located in the Waynesville Visitor Center at 44 N. Main St, Waynesville, NC 28786.
