SYLVA — The WNC Athletic Conference-leading Tuscola varsity baseball team blinked in Friday afternoon’s road matinee with two marquee lefties opposing each other.
However, only one lefty finished the game.
Smoky Mountain’s Cole Hooper threw a masterful, two-hit, complete-game shutout to earn the win as the Mustangs thumped the Mountaineers, 12-0.
Tuscola’s Nick Worrell was tagged with the loss as he lasted just 2.1 innings, gave up three hits, allowed eight runs (seven earned) and walked six.
The loss creates a three-way tie for first place in the WNCAC between the Mountaineers (7-3, 6-2), Franklin (10-2, 6-2) and Pisgah (9-4, 6-2). Smoky improved to 5-3 in the conference and 6-5 overall.
