Soil, water district sponsors contests for studentsSpecial to The Mountaineer
The Haywood Soil and Water Conservation District is offering students the opportunity to express themselves through a variety of contests while competing for prize money and trophies. First place winners will advance to the next level of competition.
The 2014 contest theme is “The Living Soil.” The contests are open to the following grades:
Third, fourth and fifth grades — poster contest
Sixth grade — essay contest
Sixth grade — slide show (PowerPoint) contest
Seventh and eighth grades — public speaking contest
Ninth grade — computer-designed poster contest
The deadline for contest entries to be turned in to the district is Friday, Jan. 31. Winners will be invited to awards night to come and receive the prizes. Speech contestants compete during the first part of awards night, to be held Feb. 13 at the Regional High Technology Center in Waynesville. Each contest has a separate panel of judges.
Interested students, parents or teachers should email Gail Heathman at email@example.com or call 452-2741, ext. 3 for information about contest rules. Information is on the district’s Website at www.haywoodnc.net, under “Departments.”
Many teachers choose to have their students participate in the contests; however, if students wish to enter a contest and their teachers are not participating, they may deliver their entry to the district (one entry per student). Students wishing to compete in the public speaking contest should notify Heathman, the district’s education coordinator, by Jan. 31.
