Special Christmas services to be at Grace Church

By Betty Smith | Dec 17, 2013

Grace Episcopal Church in Waynesville will be celebrating the Christmas season with three services at 394 N. Haywood St.

At 5 p.m., Christmas Eve, Dec 24,   there will be a choir concert led by Grace’s new choir director and organist, Kathy McNeil, who has recently brought her talents to the Waynesville area and to Grace.  The concert will feature instrumental solos by Kathy and Charles Alley on the flute and clarinet, respectively, and vocal solos by choir members Marlene Hyatt and Kathleen Vogt.

A service will follow at 5:15 p.m., including a special story for the children in addition to the Christmas sermon.  Immediately after the service, everyone is invited to stay to share cookies, hot chocolate and apple cider in the church’s social hall.

There will be a worship service at 9:30 a.m. Christmas day, Dec. 25,with Holy Communion and traditional Christmas carols. The choirwill be accompanied by Kathy Alley on the flute and Charles Alley on the clarinet.

At 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Dec, 29,there will be the “Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols.” This is an exquisite tradition that was introduced in 1918 at King’s College, Cambridge, England, and brings an imaginative approach to worship with carols and readings from the Bible.  “Lessons and Carols” most often occurs in Anglican churches, but numerous other Christian churches have adopted this service, or a variation, as part of their Christmas carol services.
