Spring Wildflower Hike in Big Creek
Big Creek trailhead, Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Apr 08, 2017
9:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Haywood Waterways Association is hosting a spring wildflower hike in the Big Creek Watershed, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The hike will be Saturday, April 8th and Donna Machen will help identify the variety of spring flowers on display. Donna’s passion for wildflowers began over 25 years ago. While hiking, fishing, and whitewater kayaking she saw many beautiful flowers and wondered what they were, thus began her quest. The Big Creek Watershed is one of her favorite places to show off nature’s beauty; spring wildflowers are abundant from April to May.
The event is free for members and a $5 donation for nonmembers. Haywood Waterways' memberships start at $25.
Hikers will meet at the parking lot just adjacent to the campground at 9:30am. The 4 mile round trip hike to Mouse Creek Falls is considered easy and will conclude around 3:00pm. Light refreshments will be provided. Visit http://hikingthecarolinas.com/bigc.php for more information on hiking Big Creek.
The event is part of Haywood Waterways' “Get to Know Your Watershed” series of outdoor recreation activities working to raise awareness of Haywood County's natural beauty. The organization's mission is to educate and engage the public, and work in partnerships to maintain and improve Haywood County's waterways.
Due to the popularity of this hiking area carpooling is highly encouraged. Please wear comfortable shoes, weather appropriate clothing and bring water and lunch. Don't forget your camera and wildflower books! Please leave pets at home as they are not allowed on the trail.
Space is limited to 15 individuals and the last day to register is April 6th. Reserve a spot by contacting Christine O’Brien at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 828-476-4667.
