WAYNESVILLE – After a long, valiant battle with cancer, Stephen Perry “Ted” Powell, 72, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, Dec. 12, 2013.
Born on June 6, 1941, in Owosso, Michigan, he was the son of the late Stephen and Ruth McClish Powell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Carol Godfrey of Michigan.
He received a B.A. degree from Michigan State University and an M.A. degree from Georgia State University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and retired from ITT Hartford as director of human resources. He was a member of Grace Church in the Mountains, Waynesville,
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Priscilla Chelette Powell, children Jeremy Kent Powell and wife, Ashley, of Maggie Valley; Justin Wesley Powell and wife, Tiffany, of Waynesville,; Eric Stephen John Powell and wife, Jennifer, of Troutman; Alec Michael Scott Powell and wife, Stacy, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; sister, Kathleen Belanger and husband, Roy of DeWitt, Michigan; grandchildren, Taylor, Timothy, Stephanie, Trevor, Zane, Layla Rose and step-grandson Donovan.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Grace Church in the Mountains in Waynesville,with the Rev. Arlene Lukas officiating. Burial will be at Grace Church Memorial Garden following the service.
