Stringfield swims to regional title in 500 freeSenior wins 500 free and finishes second in 200 free; Schumacher collects silver in 200 IM, bronze and sets school record in 100 breast
HUNTERSVILLE — For the third-time in her career, Tuscola senior Katy Stringfield won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3-A West Regional championship in the 500 free and finished second in the 200 free at the Family Fitness and Aquatic Center Friday night.
A total of 11 Mountaineers (top 12 finish) qualified to advance into the state Class 3-A championships this weekend in Cary and will compete in 11 individual events and in four relays.
In the team standings, the Tuscola girls finished third behind second place Marvin Ridge and champion Charlotte Catholic, while head coach Robin Batchelor’s boys were 14th.
The 11 Mountaineers who qualified for the state meet were Stringfield (500 free, 200 free, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay); London Schumacher (200 IM, 100 breast, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay); Hannah McLeod (100 breast, 100 fly, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay); Vanessa Ly (500 free, 400 free relay); Annie Ly (400 free relay, 200 medley relay); Erin Peterson (400 free relay); Chloe Zacher 200 free relay); Stefan Emsheimer (400 free relay); Collin Purrman (400 free relay, 100 back, 200 free); Jack MacDonald (100 free, 400 free relay) and Mason Calhoun (100 back, 400 free relay).
Schumacher finished second in the 200 IM and set a school record of 1:10.05 with a third place finish in the 100 breast. McLeod was 10th in the 100 breast and 11th in the 100 fly, while (Vanessa) Ly was 12th in the 500 free).
The Tuscola girls’ 200 medley relay was sixth, the 200 free relay was fourth and the 400 free relay was eighth.
In the boys’ regional, Purrman finished fifth in the 100 back and sixth in the 200 free, while MacDonald was eighth in the 100 free and Calhoun was 12th in the 100 back.
The Tuscola boys’ 400 free relay team was 11th.
Other notable finishes for Tuscola swimmers that did not qualify for the state championships were Cora Dodson (15th/500 free, 18th/100 back); (Vanessa) Ly (14th/100 breast); (Annie) Ly (16th/200 free, 16th/100 fly); Peterson (19th/200 IM, 19th/500 free); Zacher (18th/50 free) and Megan Jameson (37th/200 IM).
