Tailgate party was a rousing success

CANTON — The first annual tailgate party to benefit fall sports in Haywood drew crowds throughout the day and was a great way to showcase student athletes — and their supporters.

Representatives from Pisgah, Tuscola and Western Carolina University joined together in downtown Canton Saturday to kick off the 2014-15 school year.

The fun began at noon and lasted past dark as cheerleaders cheered on the cross-country runners and those in a rousing corn hole tournament. The day also offered a chance for booster clubs to make a little money selling shirts, hats and other items for fans to wear while supporting their teams.

Canton business owner Pat Smathers, didn't have any figures on how much was raised during the day, but said the event will certainly be held again next year.

"There will be some things we'll change next year," he said, noting that the gathering will be shorter and will likely start later in the day.
