Tax season is here again and the AARP Foundation will sponsor a free tax preparation program for all low and moderate income taxpayers, especially anyone 50 and over — Tax-Aide.
Volunteers will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Feb. 7 and ending April 15 at HART Theatre, 250 Pigeon St., Waynesville.
As in the past, Tax-Aide will work on a first come, first served basis; however, new this year, advance appointments will be welcomed.
To further accommodate anyone unable to come during normal operating hours, during the first four Wednesdays — Feb. 8, 15, 22, and March 1 — Tax-Aide will accept appointments after hours until 8 p.m. Call 476-9570 to make an appointment.
Haywood County Tax-Aide is staffed by volunteers who have been certified by the IRS to prepare and file income tax returns.
Some limitations, imposed by the IRS and AARP Foundation, mean that a limited number of taxpayers cannot use the services. This includes those receiving rental income; clergy; self-employed persons who suffered a loss on their business activity; farmers; and military personnel.
Photo IDs and Social Security cards are required to have taxes prepared and filed electronically. It is also helpful to have last year’s return.
Additionally, information on dependents, income and expenses are necessary to prepare a complete and accurate tax return. Information on health insurance is an important part of the tax return in accordance with the provisions of the Affordable Care Act.
Early birds should be aware that, as part of its anti-fraud efforts, the IRS will delay until Feb. 15 processing on any return that claims Earned Income or Additional Child Credits.
Those expecting to receive a refund are advised to bring a blank personal check to make it possible to have the refund deposited directly into a bank account, thus reducing the delay in receiving a refund by three to four weeks.
Call 476-9570 for further information or to make an appointment.
