A Waynesville teen died after falling out of the bed of a moving pickup truck early Wednesday morning in the Fines Creek area of Clyde.

Emergency workers and law enforcement responded to the call on Shelton Laurel Road around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday where Randy Tyler Jensen, 18, had been riding in the back of a pickup truck when he fell out.

Jensen, a resident of the Allen's Creek community, was pronounced dead at the scene. No others were injured. The sheriff's office has not released how many others were in the pickup truck at the time of the incident.

The teen was a former student of Central Haywood High School and a bright spot in the classroom, said Principal Jeff Haney.

"What a tragic loss this is," Haney said Thursday. "He was a very bright, nice young man who was very loyal to his peers."

No matter where he went, Jensen was always smiling.

"You could tell he just really enjoyed life," Haney said, adding he could tell the Jensens were a close-knit family because of his close relationship with his three brothers.

Jensen left Central Haywood in 2012 and was a student at the Alternative Learning Center.

The incident remains under investigation by the Haywood County Sheriff's Office and more information will be released as it becomes available.
