Tips to Make Your New Year’s Resolution a Successful One
As the New Year has started many look forward to accomplishing their resolutions. The most common New Year’s resolutions is, of course, geared towards some type of ubiquitous nutrition or fitness related goal.
According to University of Scranton, research suggests that just 8 percent of people achieve their New Year's goals. Why is this?
“The overly popular fitness new year’s resolution should not amount to how many marathons you want to achieve this year, if you have a fitness related resolution, make sure your goal is a S.M.A.R.T one, meaning specific, measureable, achievable, relevant and time bound. Short-term improvements are more likely to lead to long-term success”, said Andre Vandenberg, exercise physiologist, Haywood Regional Health and Fitness Center.
Haywood Regional Health and Fitness Center (HRHFC) offers the following advice that they think is necessary to make your new year’s resolution have a more fitting chance of being successful:
- Get a personal trainer. HRHFC personal trainers are dedicated to helping you realize your potential. They can help you to recognize goals specifically geared toward you and your current health. They also educate you on the necessary tools needed to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle for years to come.
- Attend fitness classes. Attending a class can help encourage you, make friends and have social interaction, and also learn new ways to get healthy on your own time! HRHFC has advanced, intermediate, to beginner classes ranging from pool classes, cycle, yoga, strength training, weight lifting and more. They also offer classes geared towards specific health conditions like osteoporosis, or balance issues.
- Participate in a Fitness Assessment. Exercise staff will assess your resting vitals and also calculate where your heart rate should be while exercising for you to achieve heart healthy benefits. In addition you can participate in a height and weight measurement, or BMI and calculating your F.I.T.T. prescription. This stands for frequency of exercise, intensity of exercise, types of exercise, and how much time to exercise. Overall this could help you make general guidelines to have a successful resolution, or alter your current one.
- Take advantage of our services. HRHFC has services that can allow you and the entire family to participate. Including nursery services, swim lessons, and youth exercise programs from ages six months to 14 years old. It’s easy to make excuses for not being able to join a gym due to a busy schedule, work or parenting, bring them along and get them active as well!
The second popular New Year’s resolutions is typically geared towards nutrition. We now know more than ever about nutrition education. Try not to jump right into a healthier eating change, make smaller steps and obtain the taste for it and make intentional increases monthly for improvements. Cut out the easily noted unhealthy items first - for example sodas, sugary snacks, sweet tea, or fried foods. HRHFC offers education for various nutrition related complications and take the time to help you understand healthy nutrition such as basic cooking skills, meal planning, label reading, portion sizes and food groups.
