The local annual Marine Toys for Tots campaign is kicking off this holiday season in a big way after already collecting thousands of toys to go to needy children this Christmas.

The father of Waynesville lawyer Jonathan Song recently donated a truckload of toys to the cause after closing his toy store in Durham. When Capt. Jason Smiley with the Haywood County Sheriff's Office heard about his offer, he knew he had to find a way to make it happen.

"He wanted to make sure the toys came to Waynesville," Smiley said.

With a donated truck from Neo Corporation, County Maintenance Manager Dale Burris and maintenance employee Jimmy McMahan drove to Durham last week to load all 271 boxes containing more than 2,000 new toys from Care Bear stuffed animals to mini drum sets.

Toys for Tots accepts new, unwrapped toys at 38 different locations across Haywood County. They will not accept toys that look like weapons or gifts containing food.

After the toys are collected from the drop off locations, they are taken to a distribution center in Henderson County. The toys are then distributed to needy children across western North Carolina. Last year, more than 1,200 children in Haywood County were given toys from the program.

Families who wish to be recipients of Toys for Tots this year can fill out a form available at the front desk at the Haywood County Sheriff's Office, located at 1620 Brown Avenue, Waynesville.

The sheriff's office will also have a donation box set up at Walmart from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 5, 6 and 7.

Monetary donations can be made online at or checks can be made out to Marine Toys for Tots Foudnation and sent to 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA, 22172.
