Tractor accident claims Waynesville man's life

Oct 17, 2013

An elderly Waynesville man was killed in a tractor accident near his home on Hilltop Drive around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

According to an incident report at the Haywood County Sheriff's Office, William "Bill" Moore, 83, was driving a midsized blue Ford tractor on the side of a steep bank next to the road and was using a scrape blade attachment to push brush on the bank.

The tractor, which did not have a roll bar to prevent injury if flipped, rolled over the bank, causing serious injuries, said Deputy Micah Phillips.

Moore was treated by EMS workers on the scene and transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

A Haywood County native and devoted member of Elizabeth Chapel Methodist Church, Moore retired after spending 38 years working for Haywood EMC. He left behind his wife, son, three daughters, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18 in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Rev. Greg Metcalf officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
