Tuscola bats pound Roberson, 10-4Carver’s solo home run dents scoreboard, Arrington finishes with three hits, Hannah gets win
The Tuscola varsity softball team broke open a 2-2 game with a 5-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to thumping visiting T.C. Roberson, 10-4, in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at the Tuscola Softball Field.
The Mountaineers improved to 1-1, while the Rams dropped to 0-2. Tuscola hosts Smoky Mountain at 6 p.m. tonight to open WNC Athletic Conference play.
Tied at two in the bottom of the fifth, Savannah Buchanan got the big rally started when she beat out an infield single before Allison Plafcan and Melo Hannah walked to load the bases. Sarah Arrington gave Tuscola a 3-2 lead with an RBI single, Jordan Kielson lifted a sacrifice fly to score another run and junior Madison Brooks singled home another run to give the Mountaineers a 5-2 lead.
Gabi Wyatt followed with a sac fly to center field and the final run of the inning scored on an error. Tuscola led, 7-2.
Manager Tara Gibbs’ ballclub tacked on three more runs in the sixth.
At the plate, Tuscola assaulted the Rams with a 12-hit attack. Leading the way for the Mountaineers were Arrington (RBI), who had three hits. Buchanan, Hannah (2B, BB), Plafcan (2 BB, 2B) and Brooks had two hits each.
Tuscola’s talented catcher Heather Carver crushed a first-inning fastball off the scoreboard for a solo round-tripper, while Wyatt (SF) finished with two RBI.
Inside the circle, Hannah was the winning pitcher, going the full seven innings. She walked two and struck out eight Rams.
