Tuscola girls swim to WNCAC title!Thirteen Mountaineers named All-WNCAC
The Tuscola girls swim team remained undefeated (26-0) after winning its fourth consecutive WNC Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship Wednesday night at the Waynesville Recreational Center pool.
The Mountaineers scored 581 points, and second-place Franklin finished with 441 points. Smoky Mountain was third and West Henderson finished fourth.
In the boys’ meet, Tuscola (386) finished third just three points behind second place Smoky Mountain (389), while fourth place West Henderson finished with 381 points. Franklin won the conference championship with 492 points.
After the meet, Tuscola seniors Katy Stringfield and Collin Purrman were named the 2012-13 WNCAC’s Most Valuable Swimmers.
Every event winner, including relays, were automatically named all-WNCAC.
A total of 13 Mountaineers earned all-conference honors, including senior Hannah McLeod (200 medley relay; 100 fly; 200 free relay), junior London Schumacher (200 medley relay; 200 IM; 200 free relay; 100 breast), freshman Annie Ly (200 medley relay; 400 free relay), junior Vanessa Ly (500 free; 200 free relay, 400 free relay), Stringfield (200 medley relay; 200 free; 100 free; 200 free relay), freshman Cora Dodson (100 back), junior Chloe Zacher (400 free relay), sophomore Erin Peterson (400 free relay), sophomore Mason Calhoun (200 medley relay; 100 fly; 400 free relay), freshman Liam McLeod (200 medley relay), Purrman (200 medley relay; 500 free; 100 back; 400 free relay), freshman Jack MacDonald (200 medley relay; 200 free; 100 free; 400 free relay) and sophomore Stefan Emsheimer (400 free relay).
Now the Mountaineers, who have qualified, will get ready for the NCHSAA Class 3-A West Regional Championships on Feb. 1-2, at the Huntersville Aquatic Center.
The state 3-A championships will be held Friday, Feb. 8, at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
