Tuscola girls win Murphy Invitational, improves to 21-0

MacDonald, Calhoun and Purrman leads Tuscola boys to a third place finish

MURPHY — At last week’s eight-team Murphy Invitational, the Tuscola varsity girls swim team was missing junior and Ironman champion London Schumacher, who was out with the flu.
But no problem for the powerful Tuscola girls, considering the Mountaineers still have senior and Florida State-bound Katy Stringfield.
Once again, Stringfield picked up two wins in the 200 free and the 100 fly to lead the Tuscola girls to an easy victory at the Murphy Invitational.
Tuscola Head Coach Robin Batchelor’s girls, which improved to 21-0 overall, beat second place Smoky Mountain by 108.5 points, 307-198.5.
Rounding out the rest of the girls meet, Franklin (185) was third, Hayesville (179.5) fourth, followed by Hendersonville (104.5), which finished fifth, Union (Ga.) County (97) was sixth, host Murphy (60.5) was seventh and Andrews (14) finished eighth.
In the boys meet, Tuscola finished third as the Mountaineers were edged out by for second place by Hendersonville, 213-199. Franklin (253) won the boys meet.
Rounding out the rest of the boys meet, Smoky Mountain (165) was fourth, Union (Ga.) County (120) was fifth, host Murphy (86) was sixth, Andrews (52) finished seventh and Hiwassee Dam (21) finished eighth.
Other Mountaineers winning individual events were Chloe Zacher (200 IM), Cora Dobson (500 free) and Hannah McLeod (100 breast)
Other notable finishes in the girls meet for Tuscola were Megan Jameson (second in the 200 free, third in the 100 back), Annie Ly (second in the 200 free, third in the 100 free), Vanessa Ly (second in the 100 free, second in ther 100 back) and McLeod (second in the 100 fly),
Winning individual events for the Tuscola boys were Jack MacDonald (200 free, 100 free), Mason Calhoun (100 fly, 100 back) and Collin Purrman (500 free),
The Tuscola 400 free girls relay team (Zacher, Dodson, V. Ly and Stringfield); the 200 free girls relay team (V. Ly, A. Ly, McLeod and Stringfield) and its 200 medley girls relay team (Erin Peterson, McLeod, A. Ly and Dodson) finished first.
The Tuscola 400 free boys relay team (MacDonald, Stefan Emsheimer, Calhoun and Purrman) finished first and its 200 medley boys relay team (Calhoun, Liam McLeod, Purrman and MacDonald) finished second.
