Tuscola netters edge Smoky

Peterson, Cox, Franklin lead Mountaineers

The Tuscola varsity girls tennis team opened the 2013 season with a 5-4 victory over visiting Smoky Mountain at the Waynesville Recreation Park on Monday.
In singles, Tuscola won the top three matches as junior and No. 1 seed Erin Peterson defeated Natalie Steinbicker (6-3, 6-1), while her junior teammate and No. 2 seed Caroline Cox dominated Smoky’s Mackenzie Arrington (6-1, 6-1) and junior Sydney Franklin edged Anne Wade in a tie breaker, (6-3, 6-6, 8-6).
The Mountaineers’ No. 4 seed Lizzie Darguzas (3-6, 2-6), Bailey Hill (2-6, 4-6) and Emily Crooke (6-2, 4-7, 9-11) lost their singles match.
Picking up wins in doubles action and securing the win over the Mustangs were Tuscola’s Peterson and Franklin (8-4), Cox and Darguzas (8-4).
