Tuscola senior Thomas Hay pulled down 10 more rebounds to stay in first among the state’s best rebounders and senior guard Logan Hardin scored a team-high 31 points, including 13 in the third quarter as the Mountaineers blasted the visiting East Henderson Eagles, 67-29, in a WNCAC game Friday night.
First place Tuscola improved to 6-0 in the WNCAC and 14-2 overall, while East Henderson dropped to 2-9 and 0-6 in the conference.
The Mountaineers led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter and took a 23-13 halftime lead before they erupted for 31 points in the third quarter to break open a close game and carried a 54-27 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Included in that outburst was a rare six-point play that sparked a 16-0 run by the Mountaineers. Leading 29-19 with 4:13 left in the third, Hardin drove to the basket and got fouled. As he stepped to the charity stripe to shoot a one-and-one, a technical foul was called on an Eagle, followed by another technical on East Henderson’s bench. Hardin made all six free throws to give Tuscola a 35-19 lead.
Senior Aaron Westhusing added 14 points, while Hay, Kendrall Harlan and Woody Cornwall had four points each in the win.
Tuscola travels to Franklin on Tuesday, Jan. 15 and will be idle for the remainder of the week.
