SYLVA — The Tuscola High School varsity girls tennis team got its season off to a roaring start Wednesday afternoon, winning 8-of-9 matches in beating Smoky Mountain, 8-1.
The Mountaineers (1-0) host Brevard at 4 p.m. on Monday for their home opener.
Foster Kirkpatrick, Nikki West, Hannah Culbreth, Alysia Plafcan, Brooke Palay, and Erin Peterson won their singles match for Tuscola.
In doubles, Kirkpatrick and West, Sydney Franklin and Plafcan won in doubles for the Mountaineers.

FAIRVIEW — The Tuscola varsity boys soccer team dropped to 1-2-0 on the young season after losing at A.C. Reynolds, 6-0, Wednesday night at R.L. Dalton Stadium.
