Tuscola takes two from ErwinGibson post double-double, Messer’s boys crush Warriors
The Tuscola varsity girls basketball team dominated the boards (44-31) and never trailed after the opening tip en route to its 61-52 non-conference victory over visiting Erwin Tuesday night.
“I am proud of our rebounding and overall improvement,” said Tuscola Head Coach Ann Gardner.
Tuscola, which improved to 4-1 overall, was led by senior Taylor Gibson’s first double-double of the season. She scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.
The Mountaineers also got a career-high 13 points from junior Peyton Fisher, while senior Shelby Tricoli finished with 14 and Alex Swanger chipped in a dozen points to go with eight rebounds. Mariah Reid scored a game-high 18 points for Erwin (3-2).
Tuscola’s JV girls (1-4) picked up its first win of the season and avenged an eariler loss at Erwin with a 28-21 victory.
The Mountaineers played at T.C. Roberson Thursday night. At press time, no results were available.
Tuscola 88, Erwin 60
Coming off its first loss of the season, which was an ugly 21-point drubbing Friday at Asheville, the Tuscola varsity boys basketball team put six players in double figures as the Mountaineers crushed Erwin, 88-60, Tuesday night.
Senior Logan Hardin led all scorers with 15 points in limited playing time as Tuscola Head Coach Nathan Messer substituted freely throughout the second half. Senior Thomas Hay turned in his usual double-double for the Mountaineers, scoring 13 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, while Hunter Bradley contributed his first career double-double (14 points, 15 rebounds).
Tuscola junior Woody Cornwall pumped in 12 points while senior Aaron Westhusing chipped in 10.
The Mountaineers improved to 4-1 with the season sweep over the Warriors, while Erwin fell to 2-3.
In the JV boys game, Erwin defeated Tuscola, 60-36.
