Two fires sparked up Tuesday afternoon in Haywood County.

Haywood County Fire Marshal Johnny Glance said the first fire — the cause of which is still unknown — was at the intersection of Crabtree Road and Best Lane. The second started atop Waynesville Mountain at Pigeon Cove Road when a man who was attempting a controlled burn in a field had the fire get away form him when the wind kicked up.

Although the Iron Duff fire has yet to threaten any buildings, Glance said the Waynesville Mountain fire was a closer call.

"It was close to a couple residences," he said.

While both fires are being primarily combated by the forest service, the one atop Waynesville Mountain has also been attended to by multiple local departments.
