CANTON — As the soft rain fell across the mountains on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013 we said goodbye to someone who shall forever be in our hearts and has touched the lives of so very many. Our beloved Vicky LaShaine Queen Mason, 63, lost a brave and courageous battle with cancer.
Vicky was born July 22, 1950, and was a lifelong resident of Haywood County. She was a 1968 graduate of Pisgah High School and continued her education by attending Cecils Business College in Asheville. She was a member of West Canton Baptist Church. Vicky married the love of her life, Steve Mason, and they began life’s journey together where they were not only husband and wife but truly best friends. They worked together in their business, M&M Steel Drum Company side by side each day and cherished these times together. Vicky and Steve were blessed with wonderful children, grandchildren, and a family that filled their lives with love and happiness.
Vicky lived a life of giving to others, especially children. She served more than 25 years volunteering with the WNC Youth Football and Cheerleading Association and also served on the executive board of the WNC Youth Basketball Association. Vicky always believed that all children should be given the opportunity to play and participate in these activities in addition to their education, enabling children to become “the best that they could be.” We shall always remember Vicky’s beautiful smile, her quick wit, her sense of humor, and her giving and unselfish heart. By being a part of Vicky’s life, each of us has become a better person. In remembrance of her, make someone smile, give someone a special hug and strive to make a difference in the lives of our children.
Vicky was preceded in death by her father, Edd Queen, and a nephew, Jason Herman.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Steve Mason; her children, Heath Mason, Reagan Mason and Mary Faulk, and Rhet and Jennifer Mason; her mother, Edith Worley Queen Pless; a brother, Charles Queen and Marcie; her sisters, Paula Mason and Mike, Debbie Harper and Jerry, and Sharon Herman; her precious grandchildren, Keaten and Hampton Mason who were a constant source of joy and also Marshal Rainwater and Morgan Jones who were like grandchildren in her heart; a niece, Brooke Buell and Charlie; also surviving are Vicky’s lifetime group of treasured friends who have shared so much together throughout their lives, “ The Magnificant 7”, Sheila Parham Trull, Betty Queen Smathers, Diane West Wilson, Lorraine Sprinkle West, Sherry Moses Sass and Carolyn Haney.
