Voices in the Laurel will perform a concert of American music to honor U.S. Veterans at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 at First Baptist Church. All U.S. Veterans are invited to attend as special guests, where they will be honored in the climax of the concert which features traditional patriotic music, as well as new compositions.

The American Salute Concert will feature music by American composers, musical settings of poems by American authors, folk songs, African American spirituals, and, of course, a finale of patriotic music. Laurel Strings, the new youth string ensemble directed by Sarah Smith, will debut at this event by playing a new arrangement of Aaron Copland's "Simple Gifts." Special guest artists for this concert include The Land of Sky Barbershop Group, Anne Lough on hammered dulcimer, Mitchell Rathbone on banjo as well as Sarah Smith on violin, among others.

In addition to American composer Aaron Copland, Voices in the Laurel choirs will sing settings of texts by American authors such as Mark Twain, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Emily Dickinson. Also included are rollicking renditions of folk songs such as "Old Dan Tucker," "Home on the Range" and "I Bought Me a Cat."

Brass and timpani will herald in the patriotic portion of the concert as Battle Hymn of the Republic is sung by Voices in the Laurel Chamber Choir. They will also sing a musical setting of the stirring poem "In Flanders Fields," written by Dr. John McRae in 1919, as a remembrance of those brave soldiers who died there in World War I. Among other patriotic selections, the mass choirs will perform a new arrangement of America the Beautiful by Ruth Dwyer, which is part of the repertoire Voices in the Laurel will sing at Carnegie Hall in May 2014.
