Beloved Husband, Father
WAYNESVILLE — Wayne Charles Garrett, 88, of Waynesville, went to be with The Lord, Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, after an extend illness. He was born March 24, 1924, to the late James Blaine and Leacil McElroy Garrett and was a lifelong Haywood County resident.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Brock Garrett; three children, Audrey (B.T.) Greene, of Sylva, Douglas Garrett, of Waynesville, and Charles (Debbie) Garrett, of Clyde. Wayne had five grandchildren, Kimberly (Martin) Mathis, and Heather (Tim) Mathis, of Sylva, Kris (Cindy) Garrett, of Franklin, Matthew (Mindi) Garrett, of Waynesville, and Jeremy (Jennifer) Garrett, of Clyde, and 10 great-grand children. He is preceded in death by seven siblings and survived by a brother, Gene (Wanda) Garrett, of Hendersonville; and many nieces and nephews.
Wayne was an employee of Dayco Southern, managing the Freedlander Guesthouse and Estate for 17 years and was co-inventor/developer on several Dayco's patents. Wayne was the owner of Garrett's Greenhouse, the first commercial greenhouse, located in Haywood County.
Wayne was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 7th Air Force achieving the rank of Sergeant and serving in the Japanese Theater as a courier.
Funeral services will be held at Garrett Funerals and Cremations at 3 p.m. Sunday Nov. 4, with the Rev. Susan Slye Giles. Pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. prior to the funeral and at other times at the residence.
Interment will be at Garrett-Hillcrest Park in Waynesville.
