Waynesville breweries bring home medals
Waynesville breweries scored well with the judges and beer aficionados at the annual Hickory Hops festival, held April 20 in downtown Hickory. It was only the first year of competition for Haywood’s breweries — and all three all scored medals for beers, awarded by judges of the Carolina Championship of beers at the festival.
Frog Level Brewing got two bronze medals, one for its Salamander Slam and one for the Ryeway 74 collaboration beer. Tipping Point also scored a bronze for its 1736 Porter and the Ryeway 74 collaboration beer.
“We were very humbled to bring home a gold, three silvers, and seven bronze medals,” said BearWaters Brewing owner Kevin Sandefur. “For a ‘small town,’ your breweries are working hard to represent this region well.”
Not only did Waynesville represent craft brewing well, but the other WNC brewers did, too. Heinzelmannchen Brewery in Sylva was awarded a bronze for the Ryeway 74 collaboration beer, and Nantahala Brewing, in Bryson City, won a slew of medals plus third place Best of Show for its Four Foot Drop American pale ale.
Haywood County residents were spotted in the big crowd at the festival, enjoying great craft beer and a sunny spring day.
