The Waynesville Disc Golf Juniors team has started preparing for the Western Carolina Juniors Championship with a boost from the Professional Disc Golf Association (www.pdga.com). This will be held on August 3 in Waynesville at the Waynesville Recreation Center.

The Waynesville Disc Golf Juniors Team was one of 5 national recipients of the $500 Innovation Grant. This is awarded twice a year from the PDGA . The PDGA Innovation Grant Program has been created to assist in the promotion and growth of the golf and the Professional Disc Golf Association.

"I am really excited that we were awarded this grant," Tim Petrea, Program Specialist with the Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department, said. "Disc golf is a great sport that is growing by the day here in Waynesville," he added.

It is because of this grant that 15 new Waynesville and Haywood County disc golfers will receive new disc sets and full scholarships to the Western Carolina Juniors Championship.

Petrea invites all of those who are interested in being a part of the disc golf  juniors program to come and participate every Tuesday in July and prepare for this tournament and others. There is a small fee involved.

"The great thing about this sport is that any age can participate, any ability, and the discs are very economical," Petrea said. "And of course it does not cost anything to play," he added.

There are a few courses in the area. There is an 18 hole course at the Waynesville Recreation Center and at Haywood Community College.
