The Waynesville Judo Club hosted the North Carolina State Championships on Oct. 1 at the Waynesville Recreation Center. The team won nine medals.

Jessi Shell, David Daley, Trevor Daley and Zane Shell won gold medals. Danny Norman, Courtney Norman and Logan Norman won silver medals. And Logan Grasty and David Vaughn won bronze medals.

"We had 100 competitors from seven states with over 150 matches," said Sensei Jimmy Riggs. "All in all we had a great day. We have a great venue to host the tournament and to add more class to the tournament we had the Tuscola High School Color Guard present the flag and Courtney McElroy sang the national anthem."

The team will be traveling to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on Oct. 29 and to Winston Salem on Dec. 10 to finish out the year.

It was also a special day as the club had several belt promotions. Sensei David Daley and Sensei Tom Smith received their black belts (shodan). Bonnie Smith and Danny Norman received their brown belt (Sankyu).

"We are proud of all our kids and especially to our senior team," said Riggs. "There has been a lot of work put into the promotions. Thanks to Sensei Ron Hansen, eighth-degree black, for all his time and efforts."

Practices are held at the Waynesville Recreation Center on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The Waynesville Judo Club is for boys and girls ages 4 and older. For more information contact Riggs at 596-0327.
