By Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department | Feb 18, 2013
The Waynesville Kodokan Judo Club participated in their first tournament of the year in Cherokee on January 19. A total of ten players participated while capturing 11 medals.
The total medal count included four gold, six silver and one bronze. The team was also the runner-up and missed first place by just six points.
Jessi Shell and Gage Cole were the stand out players of the day. Cole won first place in his division while Shell won first place in her division as well as first place in the senior division. That was the first time Shell had participated in that division.
The Waynesville Kodokan Club will next travel to Atlanta and Jacksonville, NC, in February for their next two tournaments. The club is co-sponsored by the Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department. The classes for youth take place on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 pm and Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 pm at the Waynesville Recreation Center. Adult classes take place from 5:30 to 6:15 on Thursdays. All ages are welcome.
Sensei Jimmy Riggs and Sensei Chris Shell were very proud of all the kids. "They all played well for the first tournament of the year," Sensei Riggs said. For more information please call Sensei Jimmy Riggs at 506-0327.
