Mountaineers to host Madison on Thursday

COLUMBUS — The Waynesville Middle School baseball team opened the 2017 season with a 7-1 win at Polk County Middle School.
The visiting Mountaineers and the Wolverines were locked in a scoreless battle until the top of the fourth when Waynesville Middle put together a five -run rally.
WMS (1-0) added a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
The Mountaineers’ Will Caldwell (0-0, 0.00) started the game and pitched a spotless three frames with three strikeouts. Luke Williamson (1-0, 1.75) came in relief for Waynesville and pitched the final four innings to earn the win. He struck out two Wolverines and gave up an earned run in the seventh.
Williamson and Clay Burgess led the Mountaineers’ 12-hit attack with three hits each, Max Riester had two hits, while Locke Davis, Josh Heatherly, Jett Benson and Hayden Driver finished with one hit each.
Waynesville Middle hosts at 4:30 p.m. Madison Middle on Thursday, March 9, for its home opener.
