Waynesville Middle Incredible Mountaineers Cheer Team to compete at State Event
Twelve students from Waynesville Middle School will travel to Charlotte to compete in the Western Basketball and Cheerleading Special Olympics tournament on Saturday, March 9th. These students will be competing as an intermediate cheer team which requires them to do a chant, a cheer with a formation change, and a cheer that contains gymnastic moves. Special needs students at Waynesville Middle have been cheering for the past four years at home basketball and football games. Retired teacher, Elizabeth Womack, started the squad as a special project for her students and the activity has grown over the past four years.
These students have formed a unified sports team through Project Unify. Project Unify is an education based project that uses sports and education programs to activate young people to develop school communities where all youth are agents of change. The organization fosters respect, dignity, and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities. Students have organized several school and community activities this year including a unified cheerleading team. Students will compete in Charlotte on Saturday, March 9th. The students are pictures with their teachers, Josh Gibbs and Linda Estes.
