The Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department was recently awarded the Pigeon River Fund Grant in the amount of $25,000. This will assist with programming for the Base Camp Waynesville program called Living Learning and Playing in local waterways.

“This program will give us the opportunity to offer kayaking classes in our pool, in our local flat-water lakes and various local rivers (class 1 and 2 rapids,)” said Tim Petrea, program supervisor for the Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department. “We will also offer two-hour kayak and paddleboard sessions on local lakes and half day, full day, and overnight kayak/paddle board trips.”

The program will also be used to help enhance the department’s day camp programs. The Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department plans to offer this program to a wide variety of constituents families, children, teens, day camp programs, special needs population, senior groups and tour groups.

This grant has given the department the opportunity to purchase 13 single kayaks, five tandem kayaks, 10 stand-on-top paddleboards, and paddles, PFD’s and accessories.

“We plan on purchasing a trailer for transporting these kayaks to many of our local waterways,” Petrea said. “We look forward to an exciting year on our waterways and hopefully many will catch the joy of paddle sports.”

Petrea expressed that the goal was to encourage a stronger stewardship of local waterways and believes that through the paddle programs, the department can strongly encourage responsibility towards waterways.
