WCU, Warren Wilson gamelan ensembles to perform Nov. 28

Nov 18, 2012

CULLOWHEE — Western Carolina University’s Low Tech Ensemble will perform a gamelan degung from Western Java jointly with Warren Wilson College’s Gamelan Ensemble, playing Central Javanese gamelan, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the recital hall of the Coulter Building on the WCU campus.

The concert is free and open to the public.

A gamelan is an orchestra of tuned percussion instruments that consists mainly of gongs, zithers and xylophones. While the two ensembles are similar in instruments, the two Javanese traditions are different in tunings and style. WCU ensemble is directed by Joy Shea and Will Peebles. Kevin Kehrberg directs the Warren Wilson ensemble. The groups performed another joint concert earlier in November at Warren Wilson, in Swannanoa.
