The Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department recently held two Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) sanctioned events at the Waynesville Disc Golf Course located at Vance Street Park. The events took place on August 3 and August 4 with 100 players participating.
The Western Carolina Juniors Championship hosted 28 junior disc golfers on Saturday from North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina. A total of 15 local disc golfers also participated in their first PDGA event largely due to the PDGA innovation grant.
"The grant provided scholarships for the tournament for some of the kids and paid for discs," Tim Petrea, Program Specialist for the Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department, said. "They were joined throughout the day by their parents, who supported them by walking the course with them while they played. Everyone had a great time," he added. On Sunday, the Blind Hog Smokey Mountain Throw Down hosted 72 Disc Golfers from North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
"Both of these events had a very positive impact on our park by allowing people from various states to enjoy the beautiful setting of Waynesville Parks and Recreation. They also ate in our restaurants, bought gas, stayed in our area hotels and our campgrounds and their families enjoyed the beauty of our area. They all loudly applauded that they would be back next year," Petrea stated.
