Weekend Highlights for April 21-23

At last the weekend is here and the weather is warm! Even though there is some rain in the forecast, it is very much needed, so rain rain come this way! The good news is that there’s plenty going on this weekend, whether you’re staying around Haywood County or want to head to Asheville for some fun. This coming weekend promises plenty of shows, music and even some festivals to attend. See the list below to figure out your next fun weekend plan:

Haywood County

Starting Friday, April 21, Carolina Readiness will be hosting a Heritage Life Skills festival event that gives the everyday person a chance to learn numerous life skills — whether it's self defense, bread making, seed saving or wood spoon carving, the event will start on Friday and last through Sunday, April 23. Classes and seminars last from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Folkmoot Friendship Center, 112 Virginia Ave. in Waynesville.

Then on Saturday, April 22, the Haywood County Schools Foundation will hold its annual Spring Bingo fundraiser at 6 p.m. at the Canton Armory, located at 71 Penland St. in Canton. Tickets cost $20. Email jwood@haywood.k12.nc.us or call 456-2400 x 2117.

The Mountaineer and Haywood Regional Medical Center is hosting Health & Fitness Expo on Saturday lasting from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the HRMC Fitness Center located at 75 Leroy George Drive in Clyde. This event will host dozens of vendors, live demonstrations, free health checks and more. Call 452-0661.

If you’re wanting to venture a little ways out to Sylva, the  Annual Greening Up the Mountains Festival will be held all day in Downtown Sylva. Art, crafts, music, dancing, live performances, kids' activities, vendors and more. You won’t want to miss the fun, and it’s all free.

For those with a dog and a competitive streak, there’s also an AKC Dog Show being held both Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Haywood County Fairgrounds, 758 Crabtree Road, Waynesville. It’s free so the public is also welcome to come watch the show.

For those with food on their minds, Saturday is Chicken and Waffles Day + Community yard sale at the Pigeon Community Multicultural Development Center. 450 Pigeon St., Waynesville. Stop by from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 452-7232.

And of course, Haywood's Historic Farmers Market is back again, starting 8 a.m. until noon at HART Theater. 250 Pigeon St., Waynesville.

Clyde First Baptist will hold a Spring Fling celebration from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Clyde First Baptist Church. 227 Main St., Clyde. Craft fair, vendors, auction, live music, barbecue and more. Call 627-1006. Free so bring the kids out for an exciting day!

The Library Concert Series presents Dusk Weaver 3 to 4 p.m. at Waynesville Branch Library. 678 S Haywood St., Waynesville. Free. Call 452-0593.

And in Maggie Valley, STAR Ranch is hosting a 'Horsin' Around' dinner show 6 p.m. at Rendezvous Restaurant at70 Soco Road, Maggie Valley. A $30 includes dinner and performance by Jamie Simpson, Jeff Foxworthy impersonator. Call 734-0194.

On Sunday, famous knitter Alana Dakos at Smoky Mountain Knitting Guild will be visiting the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. 305 N. Main St., Waynesville from 2:15 to 4 p.m. Call 246-0689.

Also on Sunday, April 23, there will be a Medicare For All: Town Hall taking place from 3 to 5 p.m. at Haywood County Court House. 285 N. Main St., Waynesville. This will be a rally near Mark Meadows' office.
