Weekend Highlights for Feb. 10-12

Valentine’s Day is coming up next week, but many of us are planning to celebrate romance this coming weekend. Well, good news! There’s lots of events going on that will make for the perfect date night for you and your sweetie — whether you want to go out on the town in Asheville, or celebrate in a smaller way around Haywood County. Check out these lovely options:

Haywood County

Want to sip some wine and give to a worthy cause? WOW's Mardi Gras fundraiser will be offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Cork and Cleaver on Friday, Feb. 10. The event is held at 176 Country Club Drive, Waynesville and the cost is $20. Proceeds benefit Haywood County Schools Foundation. Call 550-9978.

How about a play? HART will present its new show ‘God of Carnage' 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night at HART’s Feichter Studio, and again at 2 p.m. on Sunday.  Visit 250 Pigeon St. in Waynesville. Call 456-6322.

If music sounds more appealing, HART's Harmon Bistro Den will feature musician Jeff Thompson performing from 8-10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. Jeff Thompson is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and performer. Cost is $5. The Bistro will be open for food and beverage service featuring lighter snacks in addition to the regular menu. Come support Voices in the Laurel and enjoy their "My Funny Valentine" Concert 3 p.m. at HART Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 11. The show includes jazz, popular and show music. Voices in the Laurel will be accompanied by Laurel Strings Ensemble and local professional musicians. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Call 734-9163.

The Classic Wineseller always hosts piano man Joe Cruz on Saturdays from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. Come hear Cruz play music of the Beatles, Elton John, James Taylor, and Simon and Garfunkel. Call 828-452-6000.

There’s also a great date idea offered in the Balsam area this weekend. If you’ve never been to one of the “Songwriters in the Round” series, you won’t want to miss it this weekend! The series will host a “Valentine’s Songwriter” evening featuring Nashville act Henry Hipkens. The show starts at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Balsam Mountain Inn.
