Weekend Highlights for Jan. 13-16

The weather is expected to be in the 50s and 60s this weekend, so there's no excuse to stay cooped up at home. Stick close to home in Haywood County, or, venture out to Asheville for a fun weekend on the town. Here’s what’s going on in the area and some highlights of the events you won’t want to miss:

Haywood County

There will be a Martin Luther King, Jr. Pride March beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Harris Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church and it will conclude at the Colonial Annex, in Canton. The Pride March typically draws over 100 participants each year.

There will be a book signing featuring Dr. William Forstchen, author of 'One Second After' 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Carolina Readiness Supply. 72 Montgomery St. in Waynesville.

HART presents its new show 'Romeo and Juliet' 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday Jan. 14, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Jan. 15 at Fangmeyer Theatre at HART. 250 Pigeon St, Waynesville. The show is set in post-Civil War America.

There will be a Commemorative service held at at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Canton. Elder Sandy Smith of Canton, will be preaching at the service and the Western Carolina University Gospel Choir will provide music and song.

On Sunday, Jan. 15, stop by Main Street in Waynesville to hear Americana singer/songwriter Ward Davis perform at The Strand. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and promises to be an intimate acoustic evening with Davis — whose songs have been recorded by Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Trace Atkins and more. On Monday, Jan. 16, Lake Junaluska will host the 27th Annual Prayer Breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. in the Lambuth Inn Dining Room. Rev. Stephanie Hand, Church Vitality Strategist for the Western NC Conference of the United Methodist Church will be the featured speakers.

Buncombe County

The Omni Grove Park inn presents the 2017 Big Band Weekend starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 featuring Andrew Thielen Big Band. On Saturday, Jan. 14, Grove Park Inn will host the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $40-$45. The concert will be held at 290 Macon Ave., Asheville. Call 800-438-5800.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County, Inc. will host its 36th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14  at the Crowne Plaza Resort on Resort Drive. Guest speaker will be Patricia Russell McCloud.

On Sunday, Jan. 15, the Celebration Singers of Asheville will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a concert at First Congregational Church, 20 Oak St., downtown Asheville at 4 p.m. Admission is free (donations are appreciated at the door.)
