What's your purpose, NCAA?

RALEIGH -- Earlier this summer, Clemson University president James Barker made a remarkable statement about the NCAA, the oversight body for major college athletics.

"To say the NCAA should try to create a level playing field is impossible and is not a wise path to take," Barker said.

Barker is a member of an NCAA committee examining coaches' compensation and a proposal that would allow booster groups to determine coaches' pay.

The idea is yet another example the elevated and distorted position of athletics on college campuses today, as if another example was needed to reinforce the point.

Forget the compensation issue.
