William H. ‘Bill’ Sanderson

CHICAGO — William H. ‘Bill’ Sanderson Jr. passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Gotlieb Memorial Hospital in Chicago, after a brief illness.
Bill was born to William and Miriam Sanderson Nov. 24, 1945 in Washington DC. He grew up in Waynesville, attending St. John’s Catholic Church and St. John’s Catholic School. He was an honor student and the valedictorian for the final graduating class of St. John’s High School in 1963. Bill attended Georgetown University for two years on a Champion Papers scholarship, before entering the Jesuit seminary in 1965. He later earned a bachelor of arts and a masters degree in French literature from Boston College. He continued his religious studies as a Jesuit seminarian at Loyola University Divinity School in Chicago. After twelve years of intense study and reflection, Bill made the career decision to enter the private workforce rather than enter the priesthood.
Bill lived and worked the majority of his adult years in the Chicago area, his final fifteen years in Elmwood Park, Illinois. He worked in the banking industry as a loan officer for LaSalle Bank and he retired in 2005. Bill was a lifelong learner, and he took great joy in reading historical literature and participating in his local history club activities. He enjoyed playing golf and became an avid bowler, participating regularly on league teams. He was a very active member of St. William Catholic Church in Chicago, and he served the church and his community for many years in a variety of roles as a distinguished member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, William H. Sanderson Sr., and his mother, Miriam McClure Sanderson. He was also preceded in death by his dearly beloved grandmother, Goolie Hooper McClure, and grandfather, Claude C. McClure Sr., as well as by his uncle, Claude C. McClure Jr., and wife, Louise Coleman McClure, and by his aunt, Alwayne McClure Claybrook.
Although he never married, Bill was a loving and loved, member of his extended family. He is survived by his brother, John, and his wife, Kathryn, and their children, Patrick, Elizabeth, Matthew, Christopher, Olivia and Lee Ann. Bill is also survived by his uncle, Lyn Claybrook, as well as by his cousins Dan McClure, Karen Hatton, Steve Claybrook, Cathy Healey and Anita Slagle. Bill was considered “family” by many of his dear friends and acquaintances in the Chicago area. Left to cherish his memory are his very special friends, Camile Hutter, and her children Michael and Cecelia Berns, her husband, Carl, and daughters Jessica, Nicole and Sarah.
A memorial Mass was celebrated Saturday, July 20, at St. William Church in Elmwood Park. A funeral mass for family and friends will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Waynesville. Bill’s remains will be interred in the McClure family plot in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville.
