Karen Williams-Lanning, of Waynesville, was named the 2013-14 Swain County Teacher of the Year. She is a graduate of Tuscola High School and Western Carolina University. Williams-Lanning was presented the award by Superintendent Sam Pattillo and Associate Superintendent Regina Mathis during an awards ceremony held June 16.

Gary Jennings, of Mountain Ford of Bryson City, also presented Williams-Lanning with a car to drive for one year.

The award was a surprising event with her family attending.

“I daily witness faculty and staff striving to do what they truly believe is best for students within this school system,” said Williams-Lanning. “I am grateful for this award and the opportunity to work with the Swain County School System.

Williams-Lanning resides in Waynesville with her husband, Ricky Lanning.
